On my ride into work today I was listening to NPR and there was a columnist talking about the current state of Boston sports. He lamented on how for 80 some years prior to the Red Sox World Series title in 2004, Boston was the most depressed sport city. He claimed that no one in Boston cared about the Celtics 8 championships in the 60's or the fact that the Bruins were a perenial contender for the Cup or the fact that the Patriots are the best football team of the new millineum. It made me sick. Maybe its because I am only 28 and I have no recollection of any championship for any major team in Philly. Yes the Sixers won the NBA championship in '83 but I was not even 5 yet and I was more worried about learning to ride a bike more than I was about Philadelphia sports.
Philadelphia has the longest championship drought than any other metropolitan area with all four major sports by 8 YEARS!. (By the way, that is a good trivia question, how many metropolitan areas are there with all four major sports and can you name them?)
This makes me wonder if I will ever see a championship in this city. It doesn't look like the Eagles will have a shot again for a while, the Sixers are in shambles, the Phillies did make the playoffs this past season but management still has done nothing to prepare for next season. Brad Lidge isn't the answer to all of their problems. That leaves the Flyers, the one team whom I believe will have the best chance. I am not convinced it will be this year but maybe next year. That seems to be the theme of all Philadelphia sports fans. Maybe next year.
Just my humble opinion. Phily Sports Dude.
